PE at Pinckney


Your child will have physical education one day a week this year.  The schedule is as follows:

Rules and Expectations:

  1. We expect great sportsmanship and good attitudes.
  2. Respect yourself, others and the environment/ equipment. (encourage each other!)
  3. **Come dressed for success- wear sneakers/tennis shoes and dress appropriately (skirts with shorts, no boots, crocs or Sperry's) PARENTS, PLEASE HELP US WITH THIS IN ORDER TO KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE.
  4. No gum or candy (vending machines off limits)
  5. No back flips, cartwheels or acrobats and no sliding on knees.
  6. Report any injury/ incident that occurred in P.E. to us.
  7. Bathroom/water breaks with permission
  8. If a student is unable to participate in PE, for any reason, please send in a note


**Students are expected to come prepared to participate.  A great part of that preparation involves wearing appropriate shoes.  Because our lessons take place in the gym, as well as on the field or basketball court, it is important for students to wear tennis shoes/sneakers.  If a student has on Crocs, sandals, boots, etc. they may not be able to participate safely in the day's activity/lesson.  I do realize that life is chaotic in the morning, and sometimes we all forget, so I allow students TWO days a quarter to accidentally wear the wrong shoes. If it happens THREE times, a note will go home asking for parents' assistance reminding him/her when they have PE.  The FOURTH time during a quarter that a child does not wear sneakers/tennis shoes, their grade may be effected.

 Daily Procedures

  1. Students enter and find their square
  2. Lesson introduction and rules of the game/activity
  3. Have fun participating in lesson/activity
  4. End of class- return equipment to place that it was found and students return to their squares. I will dismiss row by row.
  5. Double-check stage for jackets, water bottles, lunch boxes, glasses, etc.
  6. Emergencies- listen for directions.



Our Physical Education program will focus on movement, fitness and wellness.  I will encourage all students to participate in many activities.  My hope is that they will gain confidence and strength plus the desire to pursue sports and movement throughout their life.


The mission of the Fitnessgram is to promote lifelong physical activity among youth.  Fitnessgram is a comprehensive fitness assessment for students.  It includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests designed to assess cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition.  Fitnessgram is also a report card that summarizes the child’s performance on each component of health related fitness.  Individualized testing is aimed at providing students with accurate indicators of their fitness and physical activity levels.

The six components we will be testing this year include:

  1. 20 meter pacer test- aerobic capacity – Students run back and forth across a 20-meter space at a specified pace as long as possible.
  2. Curl-ups- with knees flexed and feet unanchored, students complete as many curl ups as possible to determine abdominal strength and endurance.
  3. Push ups- push up to an elbow angle of 90 degrees .  This determines upper body strength and endurance.
  4. Trunk lift- to lift upper body off floor using muscles of the back to determine extensor strength and flexibility.
  5. Sit and Reach- This also tests for flexibility especially the hamstring muscles.
  6. Weight and height  will be taken to determine Body Mass Index which provides an indication of appropriateness of a child’s weight relative to height.

 *Although all grades will participate in Fitnessgram fitness tests, scores are only recorded for 5th graders, as per the request of the State of South Carolina.
